NEW British Standard First Aid Kit

We’ve received a number of requests for information via the website regarding content of a first aid kit and this subject has always been the source of much debate on training courses over the years!

New British Standard First Aid Kit

In January 2012, the original HSE / BHTA guidance for first aid kit contents was revoked at the same time a new BRITISH STANDARD WORKPLACE FIRST AID KIT was introduced. The HSE and BHTA were involved with the development of the BS 8599 standard.

So what’s changed?…

Well here’s the precis! Less of the items we use least (large bandages, slings), more of the things we use more of (gloves, wipes, plasters) and additional items that are newer to the market than the inception of the original guidance.

This includes…

  • CPR barrier/shield – as PPE
  • Nitrile gloves – (not latex) to reduce allergy risk
  • Foil blanket – to help with shock treatment
  • Hydrogel burns dressing
  • Tufcut scissors – to cut clothing / dressings
  • Micropore tape – to fix dressings
  • Finger dressings
  • Conforming bandage – such as those used for sprains

*N.B. The HSE state that it is NOT a regulatory requirement to upgrade your kits. However, a risk assessment will have to deem your current or adapted provision appropriate for your workplace.

So What do I need to do?…

Decide whether your current kit is sufficient and produce a risk assessment to justify decision OR purchase an “upgrade pack” at the cost of approx £8 and add it to your current kit(s).

“Our viewpoint at ATS is that the new standard is a much needed review and the changes are ALL useful and useable!”

More details of the BS kit content requirements can be viewed at the Guidance section of our site or can be seen in greater detail on SP Services guide.

This made us chuckle a little in the office so thought we’d share it with the rest of the world!

Funny BHF Hands-only CPR Video with Vinnie Jones!

Take a look at this funny and effective “lock-stock” style Hands only CPR video! The British heart foundation have produced a great new video resource to try and dispell the fears and impart basic knowledge for NON-TRAINED persons in emergency situations.

Although we think this is a great video from a humourous and educational perspective, we at Atlantis Training Services would like to ensure that it it is clear that if you are TRAINED in First Aid / CPR and it is safe for you to do so, 30 compressions should be followed by 2 rescue breaths and repeated as per your training.

Have a look and let us know what you think in the comments section below…
